In a press release on Friday, December 14, 2014, about the Sandy Hook tragedy, the Communications Director for the National Association of School Psychologists, Kathy Cowan, expressed sadness and support for all involved, and noted the death of Mary Sherlach, school psychologist. Cowan wrote, “On behalf of our 25,000 members, the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) joins the nation in expressing our sadness and shock at the horrific events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.”
She said that it is important to remember that an event like this is rare and that schools are one of the safest places for children. She provided ideas to help children with the aftermath of the shooting. And she wrote, “This is an extremely important time to reinforce children’s natural resilience and emphasize the preventive steps that schools can take to maintain a safe and caring school environment.”
“Among those who lost their life today was Mary Sherlach, Sandy Hook ES school psychologist and a NASP member,” Cowan wrote. “Like all school psychologists, Mary cared deeply about her students and was committed to their personal well-being and success in school, at home, and throughout life. The thoughts and prayers of the school psychology family are with Mary’s family and circle of friends, as well as the students she served so well.”
