Except for St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome, the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris is perhaps the most

well-known and important church in the world. The Cathedral is located on the Ile de la Cité in the

middle of the Seine River. It dates from the 12th century

and has been renovated and updated many times.

Stained glass windows are some of the most beautiful

features of churches in Europe.

The most famous window of the Cathedral of

Notre Dame is the South Rose

Window (below).

It is said to represent

"Christ’s triumphant

reigning over Heaven,

surrounded by all

his witnesses

on earth.”
