In a large (n=5,918), population-based study of both sexes and two age groups, researchers measured mental health status.1 They examined anxiety and its relationship to the amount of choline in the blood. A significant inverse relationship between plasma choline and anxiety was found. However, the relationship did not extend to depression. Choline is necessary for the production of acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter.
